Is this just the best of what’s common, or is it the best of what’s possible?

The brain feels great about where you are and how things are going based on comparing itself to the best of what’s common: all the tense, tired, distracted, uninspired people who work with you, or compete with you. Get a little ahead of that crowd, and your brain thinks you’re a superhero.

When you feel great about progress, no matter how small, be happy for that. But quickly ask yourself, Is this just the best of what’s common, or is it the best of what’s possible? Dial up your curiosity; face the challenge.

Make the simple, purposeful switch from being better than the crowd to being better than your previous best. Then you’re ready to ask, What’s next? What’s even better?
